Fraxel / CO2 Erbium Yag

The Fraxel/CO2 and Erbium Yag laser has many uses and benefits. The laser we use is the Ellman Cortex which has both the CO2 and Erbium Yag hand pieces. Due to the fact that this is a class four medical device, clearance through our clinic’s physician and or nurse practitioner is necessary to attain before treatment. Once a patient has been cleared for treatment the designated technician will evaluate their needs and wants and decide how to proceed with their specific treatment. The Cortex can be used for multiple different treatments such as, complete facial resurfacing and scar treatments. During the facial resurfacing treatment, the designated technician will first, determine if the patient qualifies for treatment, and second go over any needs and wants the patients may have, whether it be a specific area they would like to focus on or just general concerns. During an all over facial treatment the patient will most likely be given a topical numbing agent to ensure that they are comfortable during the entirety of the procedure. Once the topical has taken affect the technician will then begin with the CO2 portion of the procedure which obliterates the tissue and promotes new skin growth. This works by vaporizing a select portion of the skin- it is a fractional treatment so only a fraction of the skin is being treated. This actually promotes the skin to heal better and more efficiently because the skin cells that are still intact will assist the treated cells in the healing process. Once the technician has passed over the area with the CO2, they will use the Erbium Yag handpiece. The use of the second laser treats more superficially, more of the fine lines and pigmentation, whereas the CO2 is for deeper wrinkles or the break down of tissue. This treatment will take approximately a week- give or take- to heal. During this time, you will need to keep the treated area extremely hydrated. We advise using Aquaphor, due to the fact that it is very hydrating and a little goes a long way. Each day you will gradually see the skin begin to peel, which will eventually reveal new, soft and supple skin. Most people will need a series of three treatments for any intense resurfacing.
